Janina Baranowska (1925-2022) - Polish painter working in exile. After her release from the kolkhoz in Kazakhstan in 1941, she worked as a carpenter's helper. A year later, when she arrived in Palestine, she completed an automobile course there and began studying at a Polish school. She was sent to study drawing with Wlastimil Hofman in Nazareth, then completed a communications course in Egypt. In 1945 she settled in Scotland. She then moved to Edinburgh, where she attended grammar and secondary school at Dunalastair House. In 1947 she moved to London, where she began a three-year course of study at Borough Polytechnic, studying painting with the son of Polish emigrants, David Bomberg. After getting married and having a son, she attended the lectures of Marian Bohusz-Szyszko at the Studio of easel painting of the Polish University Abroad between 1951 and 1954. From 1955 to 1956 she supplemented her education at the Putney School of Art. She was also a member of the Women's International Art Club, the International Association of Art, the National Society of Painters and the Association of Polish Artists, where she became secretary in 1958 and was president from 1981 to 1991.
