Biography:

Jerzy Matulewicz (1871-1927), born in Lugine, son of Andrzej and Ursula Matulewicz. He finished secondary school in Marijampole. He continued his education in Warsaw and Kielce. In the latter place he joined the Seminary, which he finished in Warsaw after the school was closed. He later studied theology in St Petersburg. In 1902, in Freiburg, he received his doctorate in theology. After returning to Poland, he taught in Kielce and was also involved in social activities. In 1918, he was appointed bishop of Vilnius. Seven years later he became archbishop. His relics are kept in a shrine in Marijampolė. Pope John Paul II beatified Jurgis Matulaitis in 1987.
