Plaque commemorating Tadeusz Mazowiecki in Albania

The bas-relief commemorating the figure of Tadeusz Mazowiecki was unveiled on 17 June 2015 in Tirana in the presence of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, Professor Małgorzata Omilanowska, and the Minister of Culture of Albania, Mirela Kumbaro. During her visit to Albania, Prof Omilanowska also met with the Minister of Social Welfare and Youth.

The creation of a plaque commemorating Prime Minister Tadeusz Mazowiecki in Tirana is a joint initiative of the Polish-Albanian Friendship Society and the Polish Embassy in Tirana. The Albanian sculptor Mumtaza Dhrami, an active member of the Society (who is the author, among other things, of the statue of geologist Professor Stanisław Zuber, unveiled in 2011 in Kuczów), is the author of the project and the relief cast in bronze.

Tadeusz Mazowiecki - the first non-communist Prime Minister of the Third Republic of Poland - actively supported Albania on its path towards Europe. Between 1992 and 1995, he carried out a special international mission in the Balkans - he was the UN Human Rights Commission's Special Rapporteur on the observance of human rights. The memorial plaque dedicated to him in front of the Polish embassy in Tirana is to become a place where Albanian youth will learn the history of 20th century Europe and its path from totalitarian regimes and repression to freedom and democracy.
