Conservation of books from the Poturzycki Library collection

Information about the object:
The basis of the collection amassed from the early 19th century by Józef Kalasanty Dzieduszycki at the palace in Poturzyca were 16th-17th century prints, supplemented on a regular basis by manuscripts and contemporary publications. A bibliophilic collection of some 20,000 works and prints on Polish, Latin and French history and literature was created (the oldest document dates from 1220). Jozef's son, Vladimir, moved the Poturzyce collection to Lviv in 1857, where it was placed in the palace on Kurkowa Street, in four rooms on the ground floor. The collection became part of the Natural History Museum located there. As early as 1858, the book collection was made available to readers. The number of loans reached 13,000 volumes a year (Poles from other annexations also came there). In 1869, the collection was moved to 18 Teatralna Street to the new premises of the Dzieduszycki Museum. There they were made available only to scholars with special permission. Włodzimierz Dzieduszycki systematically added to the collection, which in 1877 numbered some 30,000 volumes and became, along with the Ossolineum, one of the largest private libraries in Lwów. After Wlodzimierz's death, a collection of natural history books was separated from the Poturzycka Library and left at the Dzieduszycki Museum of Natural History on Teatralna Street, while the rest of the collection returned to the palace on Kurkowa Street. During the Second World War, this part of the book collection was largely destroyed by the Russian troops stationed there. In the winter of 1939-1940, Russian soldiers sold books in sacks as firewood. The surviving part of the old-print collection is now in the Vasyl Stefanyk National Scientific Library of Ukraine on Lysenko Street (with the stamps JD - Jozef Dzieduszycki or JWD - Jozef Wlodzimierz Dzieduszycki).

The natural history book collection, which remained in the Natural History Museum, has survived in the same place to the present day. In today's State Natural History Museum of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, some 23,000 books have been preserved and are still used by readers.
