Polish bookshop in Paris

In 1833, in Paris, Eustachy Januszkiewicz opened the Librairie Polonaise - the Polish Bookshop. Januszkiewicz belonged to the emigrants who left Poland after the fall of the November Uprising. It was with them in mind, and the maintenance of culture abroad, that Librairie Polonaise was established. After the First World War, the bookshop's activity was resumed by the Warsaw bookshop of Gebethner and Wolff. At that time, it was moved to Boulevard Saint-Germain, where it remains to this day. From its inception, the bookshop was a kind of meeting centre for the Polish community, cultivating Polish memory and culture. Today, Polish literature and newspapers can still be purchased there.
