On 1.07.1863, the troops of General Jozef Wysocki and Colonel Franciszek Ksawery Horodynski launched an unsuccessful attack on Radziwill. As a result of an attempt to force the bridge leading to the town, some 200 insurgents from General Wysocki's unit were killed, while 104 insurgents from Colonel Horodyński's unit were killed in battle in the Radziwiłłów market square (according to Russian sources). Among the fallen were Colonel Horodynski and his chief of staff - Colonel Michał Bończa-Domagalski.

The dead Russians and Poles were buried in the local cemetery. A monument - an obelisk - was erected to the killed Russians, which has survived to the present day.

The Polish insurgents were buried in a common grave. A wooden cross was erected on their grave in 1916. In 1938, a slab was placed on the grave with an inscription suggesting that it was planned to erect a permanent monument at the site. The inscription states: "Foundation stone for a monument to the insurgents of 1863 / Radziwiłłów 1.07.1938". In the post-war period the grave was very neglected and overgrown. At the end of the 1980s it was tidied up by "Energopol" workers employed in Netiszyn.

The next renovation of this grave took place in 2023. The work was carried out by the Foundation Partnership for Central and Eastern Europe within the framework of a task co-financed by the programme of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage 'Sites of National Remembrance Abroad'.
