In the state of North Carolina, the town of Raleigh is home to the Dorton Arena. The project was designed by Pole Maciej Nowicki and William Henley Dietrick. The Dorton Arena was the first structure in the world to use rope roof support. The structure is based on two parabolic concrete arches that slope to the point where they are more parallel to the ground than vertical. The arena was built in 1952 and was recognised as a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2002. The Polish architect unfortunately did not live to see the completion of his masterpiece, as he died in a plane crash in 1950.
