Icon of Our Lady of the Dawn Gate in Falkland

An icon of Our Lady of the Dawn Gate was donated to the Royal Chapel in the Falkland Islands Palace in 1944 by the 3rd Battalion of the 1st Polish Parachute Brigade. The donation was made on behalf of the units that were stationed in the Falklands between 1941 and 1944 and prayed in this chapel.

The icon was designed and created by a Polish artist, Second Lieutenant Albin Bratek, and has a background of embossed leather in cardinal red. The facial details are painted in oil paints and the vestments are made of polished copper, brass and white metal. The metal is believed to have come from meat ration tins that were used by soldiers.

The polished stainless steel plaque features a Polish eagle and the inscription: "Under your protection we give our homeland and ourselves. Soldiers of the 3rd Battalion, Falkland AD 1944".

In 1973, the icon was restored by a local goldsmith in Lundin Links (about 13 miles from the Palace), followed by a rededication ceremony on 23 September that year.
