Monument to the Polish Defenders of the City of Missolunga

Messolongi (Missolungi) is a town located in western Greece, lying at the entrance to the Gulf of Corinth. In 1770 the town fell under Turkish occupation. On 20 May 1821, Messolongi joined the Greek national liberation uprising, in which Filhellenes also took an active part, among them Poles, mainly legionaries from the shattered Napoleonic army. After a year of merciless siege, the decision was taken to blow themselves up using leftover gunpowder. This act became known as the 'exodus'. The remains of the fallen rested in the so-called 'Garden of Heroes' after the liberation of Greece in 1830. In the heroic struggle to liberate Messolonga, several Poles who carried the slogan 'for your freedom and ours' on their banners also died. Confirmed names include Jan Nepomucen Dzierżawski, a veteran of the Napoleonic wars, a former major in the Russian army unknown by name Grabowski, and Michał Torosakowski. The monument to the Polish defenders of the city, seen in the photographs, was unveiled on 13 June 1938. The author of the project was Professor Henryk Uziembło. The monument is located in the aforementioned 'Garden of Heroes'.
