The National History Museum of the Irkutsk Region, founded in 1782, is one of the oldest museums in Russia. From the 1860s, a group of Polish exiles, nature researchers, were associated with the institution. Prominent among them were prominent figures such as Benedykt Dybowski, Wiktor Godlewski, Aleksander Czekanowski and Jan Czerski. All were involved in the study of Siberia, for which they were honoured with gold medals by the Russian Geographical Society. On the façade of the museum building, built in 1883, Jan Czerski's name is inscribed in Cyrillic letters, commemorating this outstanding researcher.
