Statue of King John III Sobieski in St Joseph's Church on the Kahlenberg in Vienna

In St Joseph's Church on Kahlenberg in Vienna there is a statue of King John III Sobieski. It was from Kahlenberg Hill that he commanded the victorious Battle of Vienna against the Turks in 1683.

The sculpture is made of light-coloured stone and depicts the king in battle dress. Sobieski is wearing a chainmail, cloak and distinctive headgear with a plume. He rests his left hand on his hip and holds a gold-covered sabre in his right hand. The sculpture is placed on a pedestal with an engraved inscription in German:

"Jan III Sobieski, König von Polen, 1629-1696".
