During the Hungarian uprising of 1848, General Joseph Bem was given command of Hungarian troops in Transylvania and Banaka. His numerous victories earned him a place in the Hungarian national pantheon. One such battle took place at Targu Mures, a beautiful town in what is now Romania. The Teleki House, located in its centre, was the headquarters of the command at the time. Today, in memory of those events, there is a small plaque on its wall commemorating the general's stay. Interestingly, during the Hungarian era, there was a monument in honour of Bem in the town's main square. However, it was demolished after Romanian independence.
