Monument to Kazimierz Kwiatkowski in Hội An

In Hội An there is a monument to Kazimierz Kwiatkowski, a Polish architect and conservationist. In the late 1970s, Kwiatkowski became head of the Polish-Vietnamese Mission for the Conservation of Antiquities and travelled to Asia, where he led conservation work from 1981 until his death in 1997. Vietnam was badly damaged after 40 years of war, so UNESCO appealed for help to save the monuments. In Hội An, Kwiatkowski is considered a providential husband who saved the historic complex from decommissioning and contributed to the city's success. To him is attributed the main credit for inscribing the old town of Hội An on the UNESCO World Heritage Register.
