In the morning of 1.09.1939 the evacuation rail transport of "Military Family", which included families of officers and non-commissioned officers of 70 pp, stationed in Pleszew before the war, set off from Pleszew to the east. Because of the war situation, the train did not take the straightest route, but wandered through the country, and on 9.09.1939 stopped at the station Buczały-Komarno, located 30 km south-west of Lviv, from where the escapees were to be picked up by the local population. Suddenly, in the afternoon, a low-flying group of German fighter planes came from the direction of Lviv and fired on the fugitives, who were waiting for their hosts to take them in. The plane bombs caused a massacre. Of the approximately 280 passengers on the train, about 100 were killed. These included women and children as well as the elderly.

The victims of this massacre were buried in the Catholic cemetery in Komarno. A cross was erected on the grave. For some time after the war the grave was unmarked and partially collapsed. Since 1998. The Council for the Protection of Remembrance of Struggle and Martyrdom sought permission from the Ukrainian authorities to permanently commemorate this grave, but was hindered by the difficulty of establishing a complete list of the victims. In 2005, the commemoration was successfully completed - the necessary permits were obtained from the authorities, the OPWiM Council erected a cross-monument on the grave of the murdered. The inscription on the main plaque, in Ukrainian and Polish, reads: "Here rests / about 100 Poles / from the military families of the 70th infantry regiment from Pleszew / victims of the German raid / in Buczaly in September 1939". Next to it are plaques with the established names of the victims.
