Biography:

Alfons Karny (1901-1989), born in Bialystok, sculptor. In 1924, he began his studies at the Warsaw School of Fine Arts, where he studied under Tadeusz Breyer. Already a year later, in 1925, his works were presented at the International Exhibition of Decorative Arts in Paris. After graduating in 1930, the artist went on a scholarship to France, Germany and Belgium, which allowed him to further his artistic development. In 1939, his sculptures were exhibited first in London and then in New York. After the war, Karny created in the trend of Polish Socialist Realism. In 1963, the first individual touring exhibition of his sculptures was organised. Since 1974, the artist's works have been exhibited at the District Museum in Bialystok, and since 1993 at the Alfons Karny Museum of Sculpture in the same city.
