Mass grave of the Polish Democratic Society in the Montmartre cemetery in Paris

On the Avenue des Polonais in the Montmartre cemetery in Paris, there is a mass burial site for members of the Democratic Polish Society. The tomb is in the form of a tomb with a block topped by a broken column with the inscription 'Memorial Honorum' (memorial). The planes of the block are covered with engraved inscriptions with the names of the deceased, and are embellished with relief decoration on the front. The decoration includes such elements as a scythe - symbol of peasant struggle, an eagle pennant - national symbol, an oak branch - symbol of strength and permanence, a torch - symbol of light and hope, a sabre - symbol of war and a laurel branch - symbol of victory. In addition, the inscriptions "Freedom" and "Faith" are placed, as well as the Kosciuszko Uprising slogan "They feed and defend", reminding us of the patriotism and sacrifice of those buried. The design of the tombstone is attributed to the Polish bard Cyprian Kamil Norwid, who, together with Jozef Reitzenheim, Walenty Zwierkowski and Father Aleksander Jełowicki, looked after the Polish graves in this necropolis.
