Tombstone of Valente Wańkowicz in Montmartre cemetery in Paris

In the Montmartre cemetery, avenue du Tunnel, is the burial place of the classicist painter born in Kaluzhnica, a townie and a close friend of Adam Mickiewicz, Valentine Wańkowicz (1799-12.05.1842). Wańkowicz went down in history as the author of, among other things, the most recognisable image of his friend on a summit obscured by clouds (Portrait of Adam Mickiewicz on the Rock of Judah, 1827-1828, oil on canvas, in the collection of the National Museum in Warsaw), a series of portraits of Towiańczyk or a copy of the icon of Our Lady of the Dawn Gate - in the Saint Severin church in Paris. He spent his last moments at the side of Mickiewicz, who became the executor of his last will. In the tomb next to Wańkowicz rests an activist of the Great Emigration, a November insurgent, Ludwik Tadeusz Zambrzycki (1803-1834).

The rectangular-plan tomb is marked by an obelisk on a pedestal, with profiled lower edges, placed in the middle of the slab. The obelisk was topped with a Latin cross situated on a three-tier pyramidion. The two front walls are decorated with engraved inscriptions with the names of the deceased. Below, on the front plinth, two panels with quarter-circle chamfered corners, in the first of which is an engraved inscription " O husband, as if I would join my soul with yours / At the foot of the cross is all relief and all hope / Your corpse rests among silent retreats / But your blood, you gave your bosom to your homeland [illegible fragment]" (concerns Zambrzycki). Zambrzycki), and in the second an image of a Latin cross in a double circle with the inscription "Tout mon bonheur est là" (All my happiness is there).

In the mid-19th century, access to this part of the cemetery was provided by a tunnel created in 1847 behind Rue Joseph de Maistre.
