Tombstone of Jan Pilecki

Cross with pedestal base - sandstone/artificial stone? and two-stage base: 1st step - sandstone /artificial stone?, 2nd step - concrete. The tombstone made according to a unique 19th century technology. Workshop unknown - the tombstone is a distant import, probably from the Congress Kingdom area. Fencing - iron bar fence, black paint, no gate.

According to the opinion of Prof. Dr. Janusz Smaza:

"The gravestone is probably made of low-quality sandstone with a large amount of iron or in artificial stone (casting): fillers of various fractions of fine sand including iron (?) and Portland cement binder (?), as evidenced by white stains in the base of the cross. This form of the cross was covered with a black layer of "refining" raw material. This layer is probably of a thickness of min. 2-3 mm to a maximum of 6-8 mm (in the case of the part with the inscription). The layer was made of very good fillers, for example: sands, granites, marbles (of almost dusty granulation) and black pigments, the choice of which was enormous in the 19th century. The binder was probably Portland cement with additives, which made it possible to achieve a polish and also made the outer layer secure. The method of making the inscription is interesting. It was probably 'cut out' and chiseled in a suitably thick 'refining' layer to achieve a suitable textured background. "The 'flavour' of the inscription is that the author did not use the letter 'ł' but only the letter 't'. What is surprising (to the detriment of the state of preservation) is the large amount of ferruginous discolouration, especially where the cross is joined to the base. One reason for this may be the method of connection, i.e. an inadequate (?) fastening system made of low-grade steel. Biological (algae, lichen) and other layers are the result of natural ageing processes. The contour of the tombstone is unique, especially as the tombstone operates in very harsh climatic conditions. The extent of exfoliation of the 'refining' layer is small anyway".

Earth grave.
