Polish Bookshop in West Berlin

The first Polish Bookshop in West Germany after the war was established in Berlin Charlottenburg in 1979. Its activities went far beyond the sale of publications, many of which were subject to censorship in Poland at the time. The bookshop quickly became an informal cultural institution on the map of West Berlin, bringing together the intelligentsia community of Polish immigrants. It was also an important centre of support for the Polish opposition fighting against the communist authorities.
