Monument to Ernest Malinowski in Peru

A monument by Gustaw Zemla commemorating Ernest Malinowski as the designer and builder of the Central Transandine Railway. The railway is currently not in use due to its disastrous technical condition. This highest railway line was regarded as one of the greatest technical achievements of the 19th century. Malinowski presented his first project in the 1850s, but it was initially rejected as unrealistic. It was only the initiative of the American entrepreneur Henry Meiggss that prompted the government to set up a special commission and eventually start work. Malinowski was entrusted with the detailed development of the technical guidelines. The railway line was primarily intended to enable the transport of minerals mined in the Andes. The actual construction work began in 1870, during which numerous technical problems were solved, such as the construction of viaducts over chasms, bridges (61 of them) and tunnels (63 in total). Construction was interrupted in 1878 due to the war. The monument erected on the Ticlio Pass is the initiative of Elżbieta Dzikowska. It was made in granite brought from Strzegom. It features a copper-alloy bas-relief with an image of Ernest Malinowski, the emblems of Peru and Poland, and the inscription "Polish engineer, Peruvian patriot, hero of the defence of Callao 1866, designer and builder of the Central Transandine Railway".
