Cemetery in Obroszyn

Obroszyn | Ukraine
ukr. Obroszyne (Оброшине)
The Obroshyn cemetery extends around the Greek-Catholic church and the nearby, now devastated and empty parish church. The inscriptions are exclusively Ukrainian, Hauser did not find a single gravestone with a Polish one. According to him, however, they must have existed in the interwar period, as the village was inhabited mostly by Poles. It is likely that the tombstones from this cemetery and from the nearby Pustomyt were destroyed.

What has survived is a magnificent Baroque epitaph on the church wall with the inscription: "Ursula z [...]kriockich / Ba[...]yna / Dala[...] / By was Zy[...]". It probably dates from the 17th or 18th century. In the upper part it is richly decorated with a bas-relief pelican drinking blood from a cross. To the left is an ornament composed of a sun and an animal unidentified by Hauser. Below, a semi-circular arcade. On the sides a braided ornament. The whole is surmounted by a stone volute trailing.

Information about the cemetery published (see bibliography).
