In the Ohlsdorf Cemetery in Hamburg, which is one of the largest burial sites of Polish Second World War victims to be found in Germany, 1,229 known by name and at least a dozen unidentified Polish citizens - victims of the Second World War - are laid to rest. The graves of most of them are located in the foreigners' quarters in the eastern part of the cemetery, and more than 300 are in the Polish War Quarters. The victims resting in the cemetery - Polish citizens - are: prisoners of Neuengamme concentration camp and its sub-camps (417 persons with established personalities), inmates of prisons and educational labour camps, forced labourers, their children, prisoners of war, members of the resistance movement, victims of bombing, as well as the so-called displaced persons (dipisi) who died after the war. Burials of Polish citizens in this part of the cemetery took place throughout the war, and in 1949 about 300 Polish graves from all over the city were transferred to the foreigners' quarters. It was also during this period that the Polish War Quarters were established. In the central part of the quarters is a tall cross, in front of which a plaque with Polish and German inscriptions is placed: To the Poles - victims of Nazi aggression and war / 1939-1945 / Den Polen - den Opfern der Naziagression und des Krieges. Behind them is a row of 10 smaller granite crosses with the Polish emblem, which are replicas of the concrete grave crosses funded in 1950-51 by the Union of Polish Refugees in Germany, which were replaced with stone plaques in 1973. In 2022, the Polish War Quarters were renovated and - in front of the crosses - granite plaques were placed with the names of the 1229 Polish citizens resting in the Ohlsdorf Cemetery. The above work was carried out by the "Polish-German Reconciliation" Foundation as part of the task subsidised by the programme of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage "Sites of National Remembrance Abroad". The war graves in the Ohlsdorf cemetery are under the care of the cemetery management under the Hamburg city government.
