Biography:

Adam Kossowski (1905-1986) - Polish painter and sculptor, member of the artistic group Pryzmat. After two years at the Warsaw University of Technology (1923-25), he interrupted his studies and entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, where he worked on the renovation of the murals at Wawel Castle. From 1929 to 1931, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. Thanks to a government scholarship he received, he went to Italy, where he perfected his tempera technique. In 1936, he became a senior assistant at the Department of Mural Painting of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. In 1938, he went on an artistic trip to Italy and Paris. That year, he also won a competition to create a sgraffito in the main hall of the Warsaw Central Station under construction, but these plans were never realised. In the 1940s he arrived in London, where he painted a series of paintings depicting realistic scenes of life in the gulag. In 1944 he was awarded second prize at a sacred art competition in London, after which he was offered membership of the Association of Catholic Artists. Thanks to the patronage of this union, he had the opportunity to create the interior decoration of the church and Carmelites in Aylesford in southern England, which can be considered his greatest work. The decoration consists of more than 100 objects: ceramic sculptures, mosaics, stained glass and wrought iron elements. In the United Kingdom and the United States, he often made entire decorations for churches and Catholic institutions. In Poland, he created frescoes in churches - Wola Okrzejska and the painting 'Most na Lutnią'. In addition to wall paintings, he also did easel paintings, but most often combined painting with mosaics and ceramic sculpture.
