Biography:

Aleksander Lesser (1814-1884), born in Warsaw, son of Levi Lesser and Rosa Loewenstein, painter and art critic, associated with the historical painting movement. He studied in Warsaw, Dresden and Munich. Co-founder of the Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts, member of the Academy of Arts and Sciences in Cracow. He created illustrations, dealt with stage design and lithography. In later years he was active as a critic and researcher of early art. He died in Krakow and was buried in Warsaw.
