Biography:

Aleksander Orłowski (1777-1832), born in Warsaw, a draughtsman, painter and printmaker. He studied for ten years with Jan Norblin at the Czartoryski court. He joined the army in 1793, then took part in the Kościuszko Uprising, during which he was wounded. In 1802, he moved to Lithuania and then to St Petersburg, where he became court painter to Prince Constantine. In 1809, the Academy of Fine Arts in St Petersburg awarded him the title of Academician for his painting 'Cossack Bivouac'. He was the first painter in Russia to use lithography. After the accession of Nicholas I to the throne, he lost all his posts and moved to the outskirts of St Petersburg, where he died in 1832.
