Biography:

Andrzej Stech (1635-1697), born in Slupsk, son of Heinrich Stech, Baroque painter and draughtsman associated with Gdansk.

He came from a family of painters, and learned his art first from his father and then probably from his father-in-law, Adolf Boy. From 1662 he was a guild master, and five years later he was granted Danzig citizenship. From 1677 he also worked for King John III Sobieski.

He mainly created portraits, religious, allegorical and historical paintings. He was the author of many works for the churches of Gdańsk and the Artus Court, as well as frescoes (not preserved) in the Wilanów Palace. His style shows the influence of Dutch and Flemish painting, especially Rubens. As an illustrator, he also became famous for his drawings for the works of John Hevelius and Jacob Breyn. One of his most important paintings is the 'Foundation of the monastery in Pogodki' from 1675.
