Biography:

Artur Szyk (1894-1951) - outstanding graphic artist, illustrator and caricaturist, born in Łódź to a Jewish family. He was educated in Paris and Krakow, and from his youth was active as an artist and commentator on social issues. His work combined the masterful form of miniatures with political and historical engagement. He was most acclaimed for his illuminated 'Statute of Kalisz' and 'Haggadah', works inspired by medieval art, as well as his anti-fascist caricatures, published during the Second World War in the United States, where he settled in 1940.

His works are notable for their attention to detail, rich colours and incisive messages. During his lifetime, he was highly regarded in the USA, where his drawings were printed in the most important press titles. After the war, he was involved in campaigns for civil rights and support for Israeli independence. He died in New Canaan, Connecticut. Although he remains one of the most interesting artistic figures of the 20th century, his oeuvre was underestimated in Poland for decades. Now reminded, among other things, by an exhibition shown at the International Cultural Centre in Krakow in 2023, he is returning to consciousness as an artist who combined the artistry of the illustrator with social passion.
