Bolesław Jarosław Cybis (1895-1957) - Polish painter, graphic artist, sculptor and ceramist. He completed his studies in St. Petersburg and Warsaw at the Academy of Fine Arts between 1923 and 1926, and at the Academy of Fine Arts under Tadeusz Pruszkowski between 1933 and 1934. Co-founder of the Brotherhood of St. Luke. In 1930, he travelled in Italy and Africa. In 1934-1937, together with Jan Zamoyski, he created a fresco depicting Bolesław Chrobry, who marked the borders of Poland on the Odra River in the lobby of the building of the Military Geographical Institute in Warsaw. In 1936, he took part in the decoration of the interior of the ship MS Batory. Three years later, connected with work on the Polish pavilion at the International Exhibition in New York, he moved to the USA, where he settled permanently. There he abandoned painting, concentrating mainly on ceramics and setting up the Cordey China Inc. factory. At first, he created portraits of peasants and peasant women in an archaic and linear style, known as the Łowicki cycle. His later works, on the other hand, are characterised by expressive contours, elongated figures, lyricism and an atmosphere close to surrealism, as in the case of 'Encounter' from 1931 or 'Primavera' from 1936.
