Biography:

Bolesław Michałowski (1830-1909) - Polish engineer and architect. In 1849 he graduated with honours from the Building School in St Petersburg. After gaining experience as an engineer-architect in Tver, Poltava and Volodymyr, he moved to Kharkov in 1873. The following year, Michalowski took up a position there as a city engineer and as a teacher of mechanical technology, geodesy and building art. In 1880, he became one of the founders and a member of the Faculty Council of the Kharkov Imperial Russian Technical Society (WH CRTT), whose aim was to promote the development of industry and technology. As a member of this Council, Mikhailovsky took an active part in the work of special committees dealing with various issues. In particular, he was involved in the development of fireproof buildings, the setting of technical conditions for street paving, the creation of training programmes and courses for technical institutions, etc. In 1898 he became chairman of the architectural department of the aforementioned WH CRTT. The Roman Catholic Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Kharkov, which survives to this day, is considered one of Mikhailovsky's most important buildings. This building is located on Malosumskaya Street (now 4 Gogolia Street) and was built in 1887-1892 in neo-Gothic style. Its distinctive feature is a tall bell tower. Other buildings from Kharkiv are also noteworthy: the confectionery and pasta factory of merchant D. Kromsky on Kontorskaya Street, 29 (from 1875); the building of the City Duma at 7 Nikolayevskaya Square, now located on Constitution Square (1883-1885, reconstructed, now serves as the City Council) or the building of the City Theatre on Sumska Street, 9 (built in 1893 with the participation of Z. Kharmansky, now the Kharkiv State Academic Ukrainian Drama Theatre named after T.G. Shevchenko);
