Cenotaph of Karol Otto Kniaziewicz and Julian Ursyn Niemcewicz in the Collegiate Church of St Martin in Montmorency

The symbolic gravestone of Karol Kniaziewicz (a participant in the Kościuszko Uprising, one of the commanders of the Polish Legions in Italy, an emigration activist) and Julian Ursyn Niemcewicz (a literary man, historian, member of the Commission of National Education, freemason) by Władysław Oleszczyński, the author of many sculptures and medals dedicated to eminent Poles. The monument was originally located in a chapel added in 1850, intended as a mausoleum for Poles, and now, after the mausoleum was dismantled at the end of the 19th century and the remains of the Poles were transferred to the cemetery (Kniaziewicz and Niemcewicz are buried in plot no. 872 in the Montmorency cemetery), in a niche at the close of the side aisle of the church of St Martin in Montmorency. The figures of Niemcewicz and Kniaziewicz are depicted lying down, in contemporary dress, accompanied by a standing resurrection angel. Between the figures of the dead, at the feet of the angel, the coat of arms of the Republic. The inspiration of Gothic sepulchral sculpture is emphasised. On the walls, plaques with inscriptions in Polish and Latin indicating the merits of the deceased. The monument was awarded a medal at the Paris Salon of 1848.
