Biography:

Charles André van Loo (1705-1765), born in Nice, French rococo painter. He was educated in Turin and Rome, where he studied with the painter Benedetto Luti and the sculptor Pierre Legros. After returning to France in 1723, he settled in Paris, where he devoted himself to history painting. During his subsequent stay in Turin, he worked for the King of Sardinia, Victor Amadeus II. In 1735 he was admitted to the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture, and two years later was appointed professor. He became rector in 1754 and director of the Academy in 1763. Van Loo was court painter to King Louis XV and a protégé of Madame Pompadour.
