Cemetery in Bezdzież

The Roman Catholic cemetery was established at the beginning of the 20th century. It is located in the north-western part of the village, by the road to Chomsk, about 150 m north of the village buildings, 230 m from the church. Its area, established on a protococtangular plan, is fenced with a wooden fence and occupies approximately 1.2 hectares. The cemetery is preserved in good condition and active. The cemetery contains only unstyled gravestones from the 20th century and contemporary ones. The foundation is rural in character, with no headstones of historic or artistic value. The oldest is the tombstone of Adam Czajkowski from 1918, located in the north-western part of the cemetery. The surname Bazylewicz is repeated on many tombstones. At the edge of the Orthodox cemetery on the opposite side of the road is a tall brick memorial column dedicated to the 3rd of May Constitution, which was erected at the end of the 18th century. The column is preserved in poor condition and has not been renovated. As Grzegorz Rąkowski describes in his 2001 book "Czar Polesia":
"On the edge of the cemetery, located on a hillock to the north-west of the village, by the road to Chomsk, stands a heavily devastated pillar shrine. Dating from the late 18th century, it is three-storey, brick, quadrilateral, covered with a hipped roof. The lower storey has deep recesses, while the upper storey has open arcades on which the canopy rests. The chapel was erected to commemorate the 3rd May Constitution and the event that placed Bezdziedzie in the pages of our national history. It concerns the battle of the Confederates of Bar, which took place on 6 September 1771. The Lithuanian army, under the command of Hetman Michał Kazimierz Ogiński, crushed here the Russian corps of General Albichev. The shrine stands on the hill from which Oginsky allegedly launched his attack on Bezdzhev. The cemetery itself was established only at the beginning of the 20th century".
Information about the cemetery has been published (see bibliography).
