Cemetery in Medvedovce

The cemetery, established on an elongated rectangular plan, is located on the southern edge of the village on the Pilawa-Pyszkowce road. Within the cemetery, just at its entrance, there is a burial chapel of the Czajkowski family, behind which, on the northern side, there are more recent burials. The cemetery was established at the beginning of the 19th century and was common to both Catholic and Greek Catholic rites. The layout of alleys and plots has been lost. Despite this, the necropolis is in fairly good condition. During inventory work, 16 Polish tombstones were found, probably made in local workshops.

History:

The village of Medvedovce, located in the north-eastern part of the former Buczacz district, is 6 km north-east of Buczacz. In 1857, 1100 people lived in the village, while in 1880. 1192 people, including 280 Catholics and 839 Greek Catholics. By 1921 this number had decreased to 1060 inhabitants, including 267 Catholics, 785 Greek Catholics and 8 Jews. Polish nationality was declared by 295 and Ruthenian nationality by 765 people. At the beginning of the 19th century, the estate was owned by Stanisław Pieńczykowski. From around the mid-19th century until World War II the estate was owned by the Czajkowski family (coat-of-arms Gryf) - Mikołaj, his son Władysław Wiktor, Michał and Barbara née Czajkowska Makomaska. Medvedowce belonged to the parish in Novostavce. There was a brick Greek-Catholic church in the village, which was founded by Stanislav Pieńczykowski. He obtained the building material for it, as well as for the manor house, in 1808 by purchasing the Dominican church in Buczacz, which was liquidated in 1789 in connection with the reforms of Emperor Joseph II. The manor was later transformed by the Czajkowski family, and was surrounded by an English-style park. A large area was occupied by fish ponds. In the village there was a mill, a distillery, a fish farm, a one-classroom school and a guardhouse.
