Cemetery in Monasterzyska

The Catholic cemetery in Monasterzyska is located in the northern part of the town on the road leading to Podhajce. This vast necropolis is still active and quite well maintained. The spatial layout of the foundation has been obliterated. Only two alleys have been preserved: the first one leading from the entrance gate to the chapel and the second one running along the wall. The oldest part of the cemetery dates back to the beginning of the 19th century and extends near the chapel, which was built by the Mlodecks . The second distinct part is a military cemetery from the First World War, where there is a mass grave with a cross commemorating the insurgents of 1863. There is also a quarter of several dozen soldiers killed in the Polish-Bolshevik war. It consists of simple crosses with metal plaques with chamfered edges. Unfortunately, the inscriptions on the plaques are not legible. The newer part of the cemetery was established on the side of Kowalówka . All the wooden crosses in this part were destroyed during World War II . There is a large amount of destruction in the cemetery. In the older parts of the cemetery the destroyed tombstones were replaced with new Ukrainian burials. During the inventory a total of 207 tombstones with inscriptions based on the Latin alphabet, 5 tombs and 2 chapels were found. The oldest burial dates from 1816 and commemorates Frans Bowort Strallenbau. It is a cross-shaped gravestone with a ritual inscription in German. Benedict Breyer's gravestone from 1833 is characterised by a similar form, a low straight cross. The only clergyman's burial found is that of Fr Jan Kolbay (1804-1873), ordained in 1828, who was parish priest in Monasterzyska from 1863. The cemetery also contains the simple gravestone of Franciszek Bieniasz (1861-1935) director of the estate. Also buried here is Tomasz Gadocha (1872-1904), a chevalier of the 1st lancer regiment, as well as a lieutenant of the Polish Army, Eugeniusz Marian Worona (1890-1920), who probably died during the Polish-Bolshevik War. A high-class gravestone in the form of an obelisk was erected for Julian Motrycz (1836-1905), pharmacist and insurgent of 1863. Nearby is the gravestone of Władysław Żarski (1803-1899), also a pharmacist and Lviv resident, and Zofia Szezuska, née Hermanowska (1814-1889), landowner. Associated with the local tobacco factory were Wawrzyniec Żankowski (1818-1881), director of the factory, and Edward Fryderyk Hausner (1856-1907), who held the post of assistant professor. Also buried here are Stanisław Waguła (1887-1928), court official, Wojciech Lechowski (1805-1884), court clerk, and Władysław Klapkowski (1885-1912), treasury inspector. A tombstone analogous in form to those of the Schneider family, Ignacy (1861-1933) and Józefa née Radłowska, was erected for Zygmunt Szabowski (1875-1921), councillor of the treasury chamber in Lvov. There is also a modest tombstone of the court usher Marceli Grigiel (1896-1921). Postmaster Piotr Gabrysi (1831-1882) and his wife Józefa (1839-1904) are buried in the cemetery in Monasterzyska. There is also a gravestone of Józef Sękacz (1851-1903), a gendarmerie watchmaster, and Jan Kuk (1868-1924), a local police inspector and gendarmerie commander. Also buried in the cemetery were the following heads of schools in Monasterzyska: Leon Schmolik (1835-1895), Teodor Sucharowski (1836-1900) and Jozef Wagner (1883-1936) school inspector. A high-class, unsigned tombstone was erected for Maria Żarska, née Nieszkorowska. It is in the form of a chapel with a statue of Immaculata. There are also three red sandstone obelisks commemorating members of the Schwestka family: Alois (1810-1887), Emilia (1818-1908) and Paulina Wegemann (1846-1909). Also noteworthy is an unsigned gravestone in the form of a chapel topped with a cross in memory of Helena Lossgott (d. 1896). Few gravestones from larger centres have survived in the cemetery. Among the few that have survived is a monument to Ferdinand Kaufmann (1867-1900) probably made in Lviv. Most of the tombstones come from local stonemasons. The tomb of Wilhelm Józef Jacyszyn (1912-1930) was made in J. Wyrozumski's workshop in Trembowla. On the other hand, the tombstone of Antonina Fidorowiczówna with a figure of a kneeling angel came from the workshop of J. Mazurek in Buczacz. Also from Buczacz was brought the tombstone of Ewa Maria Sokołowska née Jaworska (1813-1898) made in the workshop of Aleksander Mrozowski . In the workshop of Kazimierz Bębnowicz in Stanislawow a tombstone of Olga Hausnerówna (1898-1907) was made, as well as that of Alojza Lossgott (1870-1905), of which only the pedestals have survived to this day. In addition, a number of tombstones signed by Marian Antoniak from Stanislawow were found in the cemetery. These tombstones were created in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Most of them were made in red sandstone: Maria Boruta née Chaszczewicz (1904-1931), Leon Chmieliński (1900-1934), Maria Ćwiakała née Szoszek (1911-1932), Rozalia Kindlarska (1864-1929), Karol Wustirger (1841-1904). Marian Antoniak's works also include the tombs of the Cisakowski and Flint families, in which Katarzyna and Piotr Ciupik are laid to rest, and Marcin Cisakowski (1868-1934), the head of the local school, as well as those of his parents and the Zieliński family. In addition to the typical forms of the Stanislawski stonemasons, a special example can be found here: the gravestone of Maria Eugenia Brezwanowna (1895-1925), made in concrete and formally different from the others . In addition, tombstones from Marian Antoniak's circle or made by his imitators can be found in the cemetery. These are the gravestones of Jan Gadziński (1871-1932) and Franciszka Turkiewicz née Łużna (1845-1933), Franciszek Kutt (1865-1932) and Władysław Pieszchalski (1914-1935), which is modelled on the gravestone of Rozalia Kindlarska. There is also a special type of tombstone probably from a local workshop. It is a felled tree trunk with roots embracing a plinth in the form of rocks. On the front side of the tree trunk is a relief carved wreath tied with a bow at the bottom, with a cross or bust of Christ in a crown of thorns. All these gravestones were made in the late 19th century and the first quarter of the 20th century. They commemorate the burial place of Karol Hausner (died 1896), Tadeusz Cewe (died 1898), Jan and Natalia Bartosiewicz (died 1899), Piotr (died 1902) and Stanisław K[a/ą]dzielski (died 1911). It is also worth noting that there were photographs on porcelain on several dozen gravestones. Unfortunately, most of them have been destroyed. A photograph of a teenage boy Wilhelm Józef Jacyszyn (died 1930) and a young woman Maria Eugenia Brezwan (died 1925) have survived. In the cemetery there is a quaternary of the January Uprising insurgents and the legionaries of the 1914-1918 battles.
