Cemetery in Schodnica

The old Catholic cemetery in Skhidnytsya is situated on the slope of a wooded hill, behind the sanatorium building. It was probably established at the end of the second half of the 19th century, which can be deduced from the dates on the surviving gravestones. According to Hauser, there must have been many more before that.

It is a vestigial cemetery, mainly with inscriptions in Polish (except for one). The surviving tombstones are hidden in dense bushes, almost all of them broken or without inscriptions. The area of the long-abandoned cemetery is now a place for walks by patients of the nearby sanatorium. Hauser suspects that this necropolis will soon disappear from the surface of Schodnica.

More than the gravestones, the author of the study is interested in the cast-iron fences that surround them. The most beautiful are at the tombstones: Stasio Samel (d. 1897), in the form of a broken obelisk made of black marble, and Bolusio Łodziński (d. 1897), in the form of a stele topped with a sculpture of an angel (without a head).

Hauser also mentions the rocks on the grave of Rozalia Kozioł (d. 1899), topped probably by a statue of a saint lying nearby, or an unnamed stone obelisk decorated with a bas-relief palmette leaf.

Other gravestones belong to: Hieronim Marceli Bobrowski (d. 1901) and Kondrat Hudzan (d. 1933).

The Facebook page of the Upper Silesian Branch of the Polish Community Association contains materials related to the project to probably tidy up the cemetery.

From an article on the 2021 website of the Polonika Institute, we learn that conservationists went to Schodnica "to make a preliminary survey of the location of the Polish cemetery and the condition of the tombstones there. For this purpose, they also conducted a community interview and a source search".
