Cemetery in Španov

The cemetery in Szpanow lies 300 metres from the parish church - on a hill, on the north-western edge of the village. The oldest surviving inscriptions indicate that it was probably established in the mid-19th century. In the cemetery Zbigniew Hauser found about 25 tombstones, including 4 unnamed ones, mostly in bad condition - broken and with obliterated inscriptions. They are mostly in the form of stone slabs and stone pedestals, usually without a cross anymore.

One of the more impressive tombstones are granite rocks topped with a simple, massive cross, in the place where the parish priest of Španov, Father Ignacy Skudowicz, who died in 1920, was buried. Equally impressive are the rocks topped with a knotty stone trunk with a knotty cross in a bar fence, where members of the Sipajlov family were buried, and the cast-iron tombstones: one from 1900 in the form of a stele decorated on three sides with bas-relief wreaths and a vase, and another, earlier, from 1883 with bas-relief angels. The black marble monument without a cross, surrounded by an ornate cast-iron fence, bears an inscription in Polish and Russian. An unnamed brick pyramid is an interesting object in the cemetery.

The cemetery has been cleaned in recent years as part of the annual cemetery clean-up before Easter. "The cemetery was cleared of bushes, branches and rubbish, fallen crosses and monuments were put back in place and new stairs were built. The statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which had been lying in a ditch near the cemetery for many years, was submitted for restoration. After restoration, it is planned to install it in the place where it used to stand. "The information was given in the Volyn Monitor: https: //monitorwolynski.com/pl/news/4337-ukraincy-sprzataja-polskie-cmentarze .

Also in May 2023, cleaning works were carried out by members of the association "Volyn Motorcycle Rally" https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=399132938948755 ; https://www.facebook.com/wolynskirajdmotocyklowy
