Former Polish National Museum in Rapperswil

The Polish National Museum in Rapperswil was founded in 1870 on the initiative of Count Władysław Broël-Plater. A castle dating back to the 13th century was chosen as its seat and leased to Plater for 99 years. The museum's holdings included an ever-growing collection of works of art, archival material, books and other memorabilia relating to Poland. In 1927, the Rapperswil collection was transported to Warsaw, where almost all of it was destroyed during World War II. The rescued exhibits remained in the capital. The Rapperswil museum was closed down in 1954, but on the initiative of Polish émigrés living in Switzerland it was reopened in 1975. In 2022 the museum was moved from the castle to the Schwanen complex in the neighbourhood.
