Former Polish astronomical-meteorological observatory on the summit of Pop Ivan

The former Polish astronomical and meteorological observatory on the summit of Pop Ivan is located in the very centre of the Hutsul Region, at an altitude of 2022 m. The building was built in 1938 and was at the time one of the most modern facilities of its kind in Europe. The designers of the building were Kazimierz Marczewski and Jan Pohoski from the Regional Plan Office of Podhale, Western Beskid and Hutsul Region. In 1939, the building was taken over by the Russians and abandoned around 1941. The building was then looted and destroyed. Since 2010, efforts have been made to reactivate the building. On 16 September 2017, a Polish-Ukrainian mountain rescue station was opened, with GOPR as a partner on the Polish side.
