Earl's House, Durham

On the banks of the River Wear, near Prebends Bridge, is a small Greek-style pavilion called The Count's House. The 1820s building, erected by the chapter of Durham Cathedral, is named after the Polish dwarf and artist Józef Boruwłaski (1739-1837), who lived in the town for many years

A favourite of European courts, Boruwłaski performed before Marie Antoinette, among others. He arrived in England in 1782 and from 1791 settled in Durham, where he spent the rest of his life. Although he never lived in the Earl's House, his figure has become a permanent part of local history. He is buried in Durham Cathedral.
