A banner posted in the middle of the house proclaims in three languages (Polish, English and Portuguese): "The King's House" - the Slavic King Ladislaus III Varna, known in Madeira as Henry Alemao, lived incognito in this building and the Great Discoverer of America, Christopher Columbus, was born here.

Madeira islanders believe that Varna did not die at the famous Battle of Varna, but rather, in the habit of Franciscans, made his way to Madeira, where he was to receive an estate from Henry the Sailor himself. There he was also to have a son, who was to be Christopher Columbus himself.
