Soldiers' Home of the Polish White Cross in Skala

In 1925, the 4th Border Protection Brigade was formed, which included the 12th Border Battalion "Skałat" - the basic tactical unit of the Border Protection Corps. The unit was stationed in the barracks in Sklat-Mantiew. At the time, there were many buildings in Sklat for soldiers, including the Soldier's House of the Polish White Cross (PBK). This was a civilian institution working for the military during the Second Republic. The PBK supported the victims of the war and also pursued goals of spreading culture and education, building patriotic attitudes and national and civic awareness among soldiers. After the First World War, PBK focused on educational and cultural activities for Polish Army soldiers doing their basic military service. The surviving postcard shows the design of the PBK Soldier's House in Rockat, by architect Emil Erdheim. Photo source: Digital collections of the National Library POLONA.
