Professor Jacqueline Tyrwhitt's home in Peania

Professor Jacqueline Tyrwhitt's house in Peania, designed by Polish architect Jerzy Soltan, was built in 1963. Tyrwhitt, a British urban planner, was one of the key figures shaping post-war modernism in terms of decentralised community design, housing architecture and social reform. Soltan met her while working at Harvard, where they both taught. The house, designed in the modernist style, was enhanced by a garden setting by Tyrwhitt.

Built of stone and tiled, the building consists of two main parts on a rectangular plan. It ends with a terrace on the north side and a large patio on the south side. After Tyrwhitt's death in 1983, the house passed into the care of the Goulandris Museum of Natural History. Sally Razelou, an experienced horticulturist, lived there from 1995 to 2021 and tended the garden. She created a model example of water management and garden management in a Mediterranean climate.

Today, guided tours are organised through the garden, during which visitors can admire both the beauty of the garden and the modernist house designed by Soltan.
