Finis Poloniae 1831 - painting in the collection of the Old National Gallery in Berlin

Variants of the name:

„Koniec Polski 1831”

"Finis Poloniae 1831" is an oil painting painted by the German painter Dietrich Monten in 1832 and is in the collection of the Old National Gallery in Berlin. The painter painted it one year after the fall of the November Uprising and it depicts the mood of the time. The Latin title means 'The End of Poland 1831' and refers to Tadeusz Kościuszko's outcry on 10 October 1794 after the defeat at Maciejowice. Kosciuszko vehemently denied having uttered this sequence, but Prussian propaganda spread it. German-language poets and writers composed many songs and poems praising the Polish insurgents and commemorating the November Uprising - these works are called Polenlieder, or songs about Poland. The painting was reproduced many times and appeared as a decoration for everyday objects.
