Biography:

Franciszek Ksawery Sulik (1908-1997), born in Gliny, chess player.

In 1932, he graduated in law from the Jan Kazimierz University in Lviv, and in 1939 he became a court assessor. He developed his passion for chess by winning the Lviv championship in 1934. A year later, he took part in the Polish championships, where he finished eighth. In 1936 he represented Poland at the unofficial Chess Olympiad in Munich, and in 1939 in Buenos Aires he won the Olympic silver medal with his team.

The outbreak of World War II changed his fortunes - he returned to Europe and joined General Anders' 2nd Polish Corps, fighting on the Italian front. After the war, he decided to emigrate to Australia, where he settled in Adelaide. There he took up various jobs, from labourer to radio technician. He also continued his passion for chess, winning the Adelaide Championship and the South Australian Championship seven times.

According to the Chessmetrics retrospective system, he reached his highest world ranking in September 1943, placing 68th.
