Biography:

Franciszek Wołowski (1786-1844), lawyer, counsellor of state, member of the Sejm of the Kingdom of Poland, emigrant, social and literary activist.

Before the November Uprising, he was highly regarded as a lawyer, and after the outbreak of the uprising he gave his three sons to the army and exhibited 10 horsemen with guttersnipe, donating an additional 20,000 zlotys for the purposes of the uprising.

After the fall of the uprising, he emigrated to Paris with his family, where he was actively involved in émigré activities. He was one of the initiators of the founding of the Polish Literary Society. His home in Paris became a meeting place for eminent Polish émigré personalities, including Celina Szymanowska, later the wife of Adam Mickiewicz.

He died on 12 February 1844 in Paris, at his home in 1 rue Godot de Mauroy, at the age of 57 (Bart., p. 463). He was buried on 14 February 1844 in the Père-Lachaise cemetery, after a funeral service at the Church de la Madeleine (B.C. burial books). A monument was erected on his grave, the ceremonial unveiling of which took place on 12 May 1844 (ZKwBP).
