They married in 1926 in Poland. They remained separated after the Second World War. Their marriage produced a daughter, Madeleine (born 2 August 1933 in Paris).

During the occupation, Gitla lived in Paris with a resistance participant, Chaja Wajsman. In 1943, she was arrested in Wajsman's flat and deported from the Drancy camp on 21 July that year in convoy 58 to Auschwitz, where she arrived on 2 August 1943. She was then transferred to the Malchow camp, where she survived until liberation. She returned to Paris on 19 May 1945. Her husband was also deported.
