The highest peak in mainland Australia is named Mount Kosciuszko, commemorating Tadeusz Kosciuszko. It was discovered in 1840 by the Polish traveller and geologist Pawel Edmund Strzelecki. It rises in the Australian Alps, in what is now Kosciuszko National Park in New South Wales.
