Grave of an interned Polish soldier in the Catholic cemetery

During the Second World War, the Fogaras citadel housed a penal camp for interned Polish soldiers (officers were sent as punishment to Brasov fortress). In the Catholic part of the local cemetery there is a grave of one of the prisoners - Antoni Worytko, pseud. Siekierski, who died on 21 April 1940. It is located by the inner road by the fence from the Evangelical part of the cemetery. A concrete cross has been erected on a slab of a rather large size, in front of it an inscription plaque has been placed which reads: "POLISH SOLDIER / ANTONI WORYTKO / ALIAS SIEKIERSKI / 1901 1940 / DIED IN THE FAGARAS CITADEL / FAR FROM HOMELAND AND FAMILY, BUT CLOSE TO YOU LADIES". The plaque also bears the emblem of Poland - the crowned eagle. The documentation of the former Council for the Protection of Struggle and Martyrdom Remembrance preserves information about plans to erect a tombstone here in 1976, but it is not known whether the present commemoration dates from this period. The condition of the inscription plaque and the heraldry of the eagle indicate that this plaque was placed on the grave after 1989. Jan Rzeźniczek (died 25 June 1942) was also laid to rest in the Fogarasz cemetery. However, despite a search, the location of his burial has not been established - most likely this grave has not survived.
