Grave of Poles murdered by Germans at Krzyżowa Mountain

On 28.01.1941 the Germans made numerous arrests among the Polish intelligentsia of Krzemieniec, mainly among the teachers of the Krzemieniec High School. The arrestees were placed in the Community House, shot at Krzyżowa Mountain on 28-30 July 1941 and buried at the crime scene. A group of Jews were forced to bury the corpses. Dozens of Poles were murdered during this action. Later, the Germans also shot Ukrainians in the same place.

After the Second World War, the Soviet authorities exhumed the remains of the murdered in order to identify them. These remains were then buried at the same site. In 1987, this grave was exhumed again. Some of the remains were buried in the Orthodox Tunica Cemetery and some were moved in several coffins to the Catholic cemetery and a cross was placed there on the new grave.

On 27.01.1991 a monument was consecrated on this grave, erected through the efforts of local Poles. In 1993, plaques with the established names of the victims were placed on the monument. The monument was made of rough, unhewn stone. It consists of a thick wall with a dominant cross rising from it on the right, and next to it, under its arms, pillars in the wall - symbolic figures of the murdered. The inscription reads: "Representatives of the Polish intelligentsia / including professors, alumni of the Krzemieniec High School / Wanda Antoniewicz / Franciszek Dorożyński / Konstanty Ejsmund / Irena Górecka / Czesław Górecki / Stefan Górecki / Joanna Kopcińska / Ludomir Łoziński / Antoni Malczewski / Józef Malczewski / Franciszek Mączak / Maria Zdobnicka / Bolesław Młodzianko / Piotr Moczulski / Zdzisław Opolski / Halina Paliwodzianka / Stanisław Pawłowski / Janina Poniatowska / Bolesław Sokołowski / Jan Targoński / Gustaw Wawrzyszak / Ludwik Zawalnicki / Edmund Żeromski / Ludwik Czarniecki / murdered on the slopes of Krzyżowa Mountain / in the years 1941 - 1944 / together with over 2,500 inhabitants of Krzemieniec and the surrounding area".
