Grave of the January Uprising insurgents

In July 1863, an insurgent detachment of about 300 men under the command of Pawel Szymkiewicz was stationed in a small forest near the villages of Gulbie, Reszkiety and Obolniki. On 11.07.1863, the insurgents were attacked by two detachments of the Tsarist army, commanded by Major Stewern. The battle lasted two hours and ended with the dispersal of the insurgent unit. Dozens of insurgents fell (sources mention 30 and 75 dead), among them Count Plater. Several dozen survivors joined Krasowski's unit, including the wounded Szymkiewicz.
The forest in which the insurgents died was called bor Polish (Lenkų šilas) by local residents. It has not survived to the present day, but a mass grave of the insurgents has been preserved. It is located in Reszkiety, on a small hill. Three high wooden crosses and a smaller metal one were erected on it. Next to the crosses a wooden monument was placed, made by a contemporary folk sculptor from Kaunas, Leonas Juozonis. In front of the grave is an information board in Lithuanian.
